14 inch YLCSD350 cutter suction dredger for India Market

1.Background Introduction

The Indian dredger market is characterized by both active international trade and the development of localized manufacturing. According to 2023 trade data, India holds a significant position in the global dredger trade, while its domestic shipbuilding industry is taking a crucial step towards independently building large dredgers through international cooperation. I. International Trade Position India plays a vital role in the global dredger trade.

Exports: In 2023, India's dredger exports reached US$297 trillion, making it the world's second-largest exporter (ranked 2nd out of 73 exporting countries). Its main export destinations include Oman (US$93.1 trillion), Singapore (US$84.8 trillion), and Sri Lanka (US$72.6 trillion). Singapore is the fastest-growing market for Indian dredger exports.

Imports: In 2023, India's dredger imports reached US$246 trillion, also making it the world's second-largest importer (ranked 2nd out of 124 importing countries). The Netherlands is its largest source of imports ($192 trillion) and also its fastest-growing source. Other important import sources include South Korea and China.

II. Development of Domestic Manufacturing

For a long time, India has relied heavily on imports for its large dredgers, particularly from the Dutch company Royal IHC.

In recent years, India has begun to promote a "domestic shipbuilding" strategy to enhance its domestic shipbuilding capacity and meet its growing domestic dredging demand.

Key Project: India's largest dredging contractor, Dredging India Limited (DCI), in cooperation with Cochin Shipyard (CSL), India's largest shipyard, launched the construction project for the country's first large dredger. The project involves the construction of a trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) with a bucket capacity of 12,000 cubic meters, costing approximately US$109 million to US$121 million. Technical Cooperation: Due to the complexity and high barriers to entry in dredging vessel construction, Cochin Shipyard has partnered with global dredging giant Royal IHC of the Netherlands and its subsidiary IHC Holland to obtain design and construction support, ensuring that the vessels meet international standards.

Strategic Planning: Dredger construction has been incorporated into Cochin Shipyard's 2030 strategic plan and is considered a priority area for revenue growth. Furthermore, reports indicate that an Indian dredging company plans to order several such dredging vessels from Cochin Shipyard.
